Social Media and Mental Health

I posted a photo on Instagram 47 minutes ago. That means I have spent 47 minutes refreshing my page to see who liked and/or commented on that photo.

Why do we do this? Because we feel insecure? Because we are so wrapped up in how many likes we get? Do the count of likes you have on a picture correlate to how many friends you have or how pretty you are? Should we really allow costal media to somehow validate ourselves?

The answer is an obvious no.

It's ridiculous how much time I spend on Instagram after I've posted. I can go hours upon hours without checking social media, but it's a whole different ballgame once I've posted something myself.

I've discovered the time limit feature on the iPhone, and it has saved my life. While there are some days where I extend the time limit if I've reached it, I've found it very useful. It forces me to cut myself off from the world of social media and focus on the present. Overtime, it has also allowed me to pace the amount of time I spend on social, especially while at work.

Social media isn't worth it, but it's hard to completely cut yourself off as that leads you to feel disconnected from the world / your social circle. But we can certainly cut back!
